Beaches · North of town
A walk up from town, dog-friendly at the far end and quiet on a weekday.
The beach
Belongil picks up where Main Beach ends and runs north-west toward the creek. It is the same water and the same sand as town, minus the crowd, because most people stop walking at the surf club.
The far end past the creek is off-leash, which makes it the standing answer for anybody travelling with a dog. There is no patrol along it and the creek mouth moves after rain, so it is a walking and paddling beach rather than a swimming one.

Where it is
Ten minutes on foot from the town centre, or park at the Belongil end and walk back.
Border Street and Childe Street. Free, and rarely full.
No. Swim at Main or Clarkes if you want flags.
Off-leash north of the creek, on-leash south of it.
Very little. The Belongil cafes sit a block back.
Best light in the bay at sunset, and the wreck at low tide.
Byron Bay
If you want sand without the crowd we will tell you where to start walking and which houses put you closest to it.
